Buyer Beware for In-Home DNA Testing

Because your DNA test results are very important to you, you should exercise great care in choosing your DNA testing company.

Here are our recommended guidelines for choosing an in-home DNA testing company to ensure that the company you choose will provide:

  1. Accurate results

  2. High Level of Customer Service
  3. Fair Price

Guidelines

  • Price—Do not buy a test that falls outside of the reasonable price range for in-home DNA tests. Prices that are too low can result in poor quality tests.
  • Accredited Testing—Do not fall for websites selling in-home testing that is "accredited." There is no such thing as an "accredited in-home test." An accredited test can only be performed with chain of custody collection, not in-home collection.
  • Foreign Companies—Be careful about choosing a DNA testing company located in another country. The regulations and test procedures in other countries are often substandard to those accepted in the United States, and you may end up with unreliable or inconclusive results.
  • Resellers—Be wary of middlemen and DNA test resellers. They may provide strong customer service, but they may not be DNA experts. If possible, deal directly with the DNA testing laboratory.
