New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Certification
Patient/resident protection and health
The State of New York has specific guidelines for testing tissue and blood samples. For DNA testing specifically, in-home collection is not permitted for New York residents. All tests must be performed using chain of custody procedures.
Mission
NYSDOH, through the state laboratory, the Wadsworth Center of New York, is dedicated to "protecting and promoting the health of New Yorkers through analysis, research, and education."
Significance of Certification
If a laboratory has NYSDOH certification, it is permitted to perform DNA tests for residents of New York. Labs that are not certified by NYSDOH are not allowed to collect or analyze DNA samples from New York State residents.
NYSDOH certification is so stringent that it exceeds CLIA standards and thus exempts a lab from needing CLIA accreditation.
Standards of Certification
NYSDOH intensely inspects DNA testing labs to ensure that all lab standards are met. NYSDOH requires that all laboratories collect and analyze DNA through validated DNA testing equipment and techniques, ensure that all proper chain of custody procedures are followed, and engage in high-quality laboratory standards and patient care.
