Y-STR Test

A Y-STR test is a Y chromosome short tandem repeat test. It is used to verify biological relationships between males, based on the Y chromosome , which is passed from father to son mostly unchanged from generation to generation. If males are biologically related through the paternal line, they will usually have similar or identical Y-STR profiles.

When is Y-STR testing used?

Y-STR testing can be used to verify relationships between male relatives based on the paternal lineage. It can be useful in cases when the alleged father is missing. Y-STR tests are also frequently used for reunification in adoption cases, as well as for identification of male biological family members.

Who is typically involved?

Y-STR tests can only be performed with males. Common participants include a sons possible nephews and uncles (brothers of the alleged father), brothers, and paternal grandfather. Note that this test only determines if two males belong to the same lineage, not the direct relationships mentioned. It can be used together with other family records or historical data to determine the exact relationships, but the test alone cannot prove specific relationships.

How are the samples collected?

There are several ways of collecting DNA samples for Y-STR tests. The most common method of collection for this test is the buccal swab .

How long can the results take?

The turnaround time for a Y-STR test can vary based on the number of males involved. Typically, for a Y-STR test involving 2 males, the results are released within 9 business days of the receipt of the samples at the DNA testing company.

What is the typical price range for Y-STR testing?

The price for a Y-STR test varies based on the number of males involved. The price per person tested ranges from $200 to $300 .
